POLYCARBONATE (PC)

Polycarbonate is a group of thermoplastic polymers that contain carbonate groups  in their chemical structures. They are strong, hard materials which are used in engineering. Some grades are optically transparent.

Polycarbonates are invulnerable to acids, aliphatic hydrocarbons, gasoline, greases, oils, alcohols and water below 70 ° C. Above this temperature water attacks the polymer resulting a gradual chemical decomposition.

Main characteristics of polycarbonate are as follows:

  • Fractureresistance (200 times more resistant than glass and 6 times more resistant than acrylic sheet)
  • UV resistance,
  • High toughness
  • High impact strength
  • Excellent thermal stability
  • Transparency; up to 90% light transmittance

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

More commonly known as acrylic glass or plexiglass in the market, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is a colorless, transparent and rigid thermoplastic polymer.  PMMA is often used as a substitute for glass in products such as shatterproof windows, skylights, illuminated signs, and aircraft canopies. It is sold under the trademarks Plexiglas, Lucite, and Perspex.

  • Main characteristics of PMMA are as follows:
  • Superior optical characteristics.
  • Transparency and shiny appearance
  • Rigidity and dimensional stability
  • Hardness and resistance to being scratched
  • Excellent resistance to sun light (UV radiation) and air-related wear
  • Polycarbonate is one of the latest thermoplastic materials to be produced and marketed , but despite this it has been a tremendous growth in consumption in different applications such as lighting,  construction, electronics, automotive and others.
